Converting a tub to a shower can make your bathroom safer, easier to clean, and more useful without a full remodel. You can typically complete a tub to shower conversion faster and for less cost than a full bathroom remodel while gaining accessible design, modern finishes, and improved functionality.

Select a shower base: prefabricated acrylic/panels speed installation and are lower cost, while a tiled base offers customization but requires waterproofing and slope work. For walls, choose non-porous materials—large-format porcelain tile, solid-surface panels, or acrylic wall surrounds—to minimize grout maintenance and mold risk.


Pick hardware rated for high humidity and brass or stainless finishes for longevity. Choose slip-resistant flooring with a COF (coefficient of friction) appropriate for wet areas, and match grout and sealants to the material type. For glass enclosures, temper the glass and decide between framed, semi-frameless, or frameless based on budget and maintenance.


Budget Considerations


List fixed costs first: demolition, waste disposal, plumber, and waterproofing. Expect labor to be 40–60% of the total in most conversions; specialty work like re-routing drains or rebuilding floors raises costs significantly. Get at least three itemized bids and compare scope, not just price.


Allocate a 10–20% contingency for unseen issues such as rot, corroded drains, or noncompliant framing. Track both material tiers—economy (acrylic surrounds, basic fixtures), mid-range (porcelain tile, solid-surface pan), and premium (custom tile, frameless glass)—to make trade-offs visible. Keep receipts and document change orders to avoid budget creep.


Installation Process and Best Practices


You’ll remove the old tub, adjust plumbing, and apply waterproofing in a specific sequence to prevent leaks, simplify installation, and meet code. Follow measured steps, use the right materials, and verify water-tight seals at every stage.


Demolition and Removal Steps


Start by turning off water at the main and opening a faucet to relieve pressure. Remove trim, shower doors, and any fixtures; label and bag screws and small parts for reuse.


Cut drywall or tile carefully above the tub flange to expose wall studs and plumbing. Use a reciprocating saw to free the tub from the drain and any cured caulk; have a helper when lifting heavy cast-iron tubs. Protect flooring with rosin paper or plywood and dispose of debris per local rules.


Inspect studs, subfloor, and backer board for rot or mold. Replace damaged studs or add blocking where you’ll mount grab bars or niche frames. Ensure the subfloor is level and replace any sections that flex more than 1/4" over 2 ft.


Plumbing Modifications


Measure drain location and height before ordering a prefab pan or building a mortar bed. If the new shower drain won’t line up with the old tub drain, plan to reroute with a new P-trap and horizontal run, keeping slopes at 1/4" per foot toward the drain.


Upgrade supply lines if they’re galvanized or undersized; switch to 1/2" copper or PEX for reliable flow. Install a pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve and position the valve body behind an access panel sized to code or manufacturer spec.


Test all rough plumbing with a water or air test before closing walls. Secure piping to studs with straps every 32" for copper or per code for PEX. Note venting requirements: don’t create long horizontal drains without proper venting to avoid slow drainage and siphoning.


Waterproofing Techniques


Choose a waterproofing approach that matches substrate and tile type: bonded waterproof membranes for cement board, or sheet-applied membranes for studs and drywall. For tiled showers, use a continuous membrane from curb to at least 6" above the showerhead height.


Seal seams and corners with manufacturer-recommended seam tape and a compatible thinset or liquid membrane. Pay special attention where the pan meets the drain—use a clamping drain flange and a waterproof collar or flange adapter designed for your pan system.


Protect wet areas with a vapor-retarder behind any non-cement board substrate and slope the shower floor uniformly to the drain at 1/4" per foot. After membrane cures, perform a 24-hour flood test and inspect for leaks before tiling or installing wall panels.
